Obituary for Alan J. Bloem

Alan J. Bloem of Archbald died unexpectedly Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016 at Geisinger Community Medical Center. His beloved wife and best friend is the former Elaine Calvario and they would have celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary on Oct. 21.
Born in Rochester, New York, he was the son of the late Harold H. and Letty Rankin Bloem. Alan grew up in Owego, New York and was a 1967 graduate of Newark Valley Central School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in commerce and finance from Wilkes College in 1972. Prior to his retirement, he was employed in banking.
Alan was a man of great Presbyterian faith and was very active with his church, the First United Presbyterian Church of Lackawanna Valley. He served the church as both a deacon and an elder and was currently serving on the session
Alan was an avid reader, sports fan and sports historian. He was also a member of the Bell Choir.
Alan’s family would like to thank the staff of Geisinger CMC ICU, especially Dr. Portecio Sanchez and nurses Julie, Jackie and Jazmine.
Also surviving are a sister, Linda J. Bloem and her partner, Velma J. Harris, Ontario, N.Y., and their child, Joshua W. Hankerson; mother-in-law, Helen Calvario, Jessup; sister-in-law, Jo Ann Adams and husband, Robert, Jermyn; niece, Alyssa Adams, Washington, D.C.; aunt, Olive Kamm, Tennessee; and several cousins.
The funeral will be conducted Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the First United Presbyterian Church of Lackawanna Valley, 1557 N. Main St., Peckville. Everyone attending the funeral is asked to proceed directly to church. Interment to follow in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Carbondale.
Friends and family may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Arthur A. Albini Funeral Home, 1003 Church St., Jessup. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Presbyterian Church of Lackawanna Valley, 1557 N. Main St., Peckville 18452.
