Obituary for Joseph Michael Hlavaty

Joseph Michael Hlavaty passed away peacefully at home September 5, 2017, in the arms of the love of his life, his wife Carol. He was 54 years old.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the former Margaret Gudzan and the late Joseph Hlavaty. Joseph was a graduate of North Pocono High School. He also earned an associate degree from Johnson Technical Institute with highest honors in automotive and combustion technology.
Joe was employed as a motorcycle mechanic at Mac’s Cycle before enlisting in the United States Air Force. Stationed at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, he served with the 526th Tactical Fighter Squadron, and also served at McGuire Air Force Base Reserve Unit with the 86th Tactical Fighter Wing.
Joe’s passion in life was music. He was a very talented musician. He played many instruments and was a member of the original band De’Spys. He built instruments, including a xylophone featured on musician Mike Keneally’s CD “Evidence of Humanity.” Joe also composed and recorded his own music. He also loved reading, cycling, skating, playing hockey, and the outdoors.
Joseph had an inquisitive mind and a colorful personality, and he loved a good conversation or debate. He was generous with his time, helping anyone in need that he could. He loved his friends and family, especially his brother John, niece Sara, and godchild Anna.
He was employed at Butch’s Auto, Jessup Borough, and 5 Star Equipment.
Joseph’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Richard Weinberger and staff, Angels Touch Home Health, and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for all of their support and compassion.
