How fortunate I was to have Mary Jo as my mother-in-law! From the moment we met, “Mama Jo” provided love, kindness and acceptance. Her warmth was embracing, her laughter infectious, and her home cooked Italian meals delicious beyond description. Spending time with her at her home in Jessup was a refuge, and time with her in the kitchen was especially treasured and fun. She was moved by nature, especially flowers, the Robins that graced her yard in spring, and the beautiful sounds of the Mockingbirds always singing nearby. She loved her family above all else.
I am so grateful she was in my life, and will always hold her memory dear! Rest in peace Mama Jo! Donnie and I miss you so much!

Maria Giuseppa Ippolito Massetti was born on December 21, 1921 in Brooklyn, NY to Paolina Ciafola and Francesco Ippolito. As Josephine Bunny Polizzi Mahaney kindly posted, my Grammy grew up with three brothers and cousins on the streets of Brooklyn. However, she spent most of her time with Bunny’s beloved mother Rose Anselmo Polizzi, her dearest cousin and closest friend. When Grammy later met my Nonno, Leo as she lovingly called him, Rose and Joseph Polizzi stood as witness.

Mary J Ippolito married Abramo Massetti on October 12, 1940 in New York. The Massetti’s eventually moved out to the country in Vineland NJ to start a family of their own. Later, they settled in Jessup, PA. They loved each other very much, and took great pride in their home and family.

As a child, I couldn’t wait to go to Nonno and Grammy’s house! When I think of my time there, the intoxicating scent of Passatelli and the soothing sounds of Opera wash over me in warmth and comfort, so I think of it often. When I think of Nonno, I think of walks and talks in the woods, so now, being a Colorado girl, he’s always on mind. When I think of Grammy, I think of her sweet smile, her hearty laughter, cooking, child (and grandchild) rearing, and above all, unwavering strength, so I channel her daily, no matter where she is. I love you Grammy, salud!

Grammy Massetti is survived by 7 grandchildren who brought her so much joy. We will always share beautiful and happy memories of her; Rachel, Sarah, Silvana, Elisa, Laura, Michael and Ian, and by great-grandchildren Tahlia, Evan, and Jake.

This is really lovely, Rachel. Thank you for assuming the role of Family Historian, it's been a tremendous comfort to know that someone is recording and remembering. Jo and Abe are together again resting in peace

Daughter of Sicilian immigrants, "Josie" represented her Ciafalo and Ippolito roots well. Learning a trade at age 16 during the Great Depression, she was a talented seamstress. She, her 3 brothers and cousins grew up in Brooklyn, NY. She married the love of her life, "Abe" and they had four children.

Thank you so much. I appreciate the time you spent with Grammy and feel so grateful to be connected with you. Best Wishes to you and your family. -Rachel Massetti
